SUMMARY SAR integrated products were evaluated for geological mapping of the Central Serra dos Carajds Granite (CSCG) area, in the Carajds Mineral Province, Brazilian Amazon. The CSCG is a typical representative ofthe oldest anorogenic granitic complexes (~l the Amazonian Craton with Paleoprotcrozoic age. The batholith is characterized by an irregular hilly lowland terrain surrounded by a set ofparallel hills and plateaus related to Archean sandstone and volcanic country rocks. The granite is poorly mapped with sparse geological information related to small sectors ofthe intrusion. The region is covered by tropical rainforest with complex, multi-level canopies and numerous species. The research was based on digital integration (if airborne C-HH SAR (Wide-SAREX'92) and RADARSAT-l (Standard Beam 5) with Landsat TM and airborne gamma ray channels (Total Count, Uranium and Thorium). The airborne and spaceborne SARfTM integrated products enhanced topographical features due to the variation of incidence angles of the SAR imagery, thus providing complementary information for geological mapping. In addition, the integration produced enhanced products which show geobotanical controls due to changes in the vegetation cover which is closely related to variations in the geology. Airborne and spaceborne SAR integrated with isolated gamma channels have provided a powerful tool for geological mapping and also favoured insights concerning the current geologic and exploratory models in the area. Results of this study have revealed significant new geological information. Five geological units are mapped here for the first time. Two large lineament systems have also been characterized. Of particular significance for exploration are anomalous U areas along the central NW-SE lineament and the association between a NS-oriented lineament and a radiometric limit in U responses, probably defining areas affected by secondary processes. The results ofthe investigation offer a real possibility of using SAR integrated data as a routinefor geological mapping and exploration programs in the Amazon Region, particularly in granitic terrains where airborne gamma ray spectrometry data is available.
